Over twelve thousand residents have signed a petition to save their local tip, resulting in council officials having to delay a planned closure of the site. The national press have reported that the Burntwood Household Waste Recycling Centre in Staffordshire was set to close on the fifth of July, but in light of the petition, this proposition has been deferred and a full scale investigation into all the recycling centres in the local area will be carried out.
In a bid to save money, the council were going to close the recycling centre, as it had been deemed “outdated and small”. It was also hoped that this would lighten the burden of the tax payer.
Recycling is vital for the planet and many councils have strict and stringent recycling targets which they are expected to meet. Recycled materials can also be put to very good use, being made into all manner of new goods. Recycled promotional products and promotional merchandise made from recycled materials, are very popular with councils and schools in particular.
Companies and businesses hoping to display their ‘greener’ side also favour eco friendly promotional products and sustainably sourced promotional merchandise, for use in their marketing campaigns.

Congratulations are due to Sunnybank Primary school, the winners of the Recycle for Greater Manchester, “My Recycling Foto” competition. The picture that scooped the school first prize in the competition features five pupils showcasing their works of art – which were all, of course, constructed from recycled materials.
The Recycle for Greater Manchester “My Recycling Foto” competition was run in conjunction with Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority and Viridor Laing. The competition was part of a marketing campaign designed to draw attention to the launch of a new recycling website for residents of the Manchester area. Pupils at the winning school were all treated to a class trip to a local waste education centre, wherein they no doubt received recycling related promotional products, literature and promotional merchandise to enhance their field trip experience.
The winners were also presented, by local councillors, with a digital camera. In recognition of this proud achievement, their winning entry was also framed for them to keep and put on display.
The new recycling website concentrates on educating residents as to recycling issues, in addition to keeping them up to date with local campaigns, competitions, details about recycling centres opening hours and accessibility. There are even recipe details from the Governments latest ‘Love Food, Hate Waste’ campaign on-site.
If your company, school or department are considering launching a recycling related marketing campaign then you will find an abundance of eco promotional merchandise available to support it. There are many items of promotional products that have been made from recycled materials, together with promotional merchandise which has been constructed from sustainable sources.
All recycling related promotional products and promotional materials are fully personalisable, allowing you to display details of your brand, company, logo or message, in an aesthetically pleasing and vibrant way.

Prime Minister David Cameron has unveiled plans to improve communities from the bottom up, by enacting a ‘Big Society plan’. The plan is designed to help local communities to get ideas up and running that will improve their areas. Speaking from Liverpool, the PM spoke of the four areas which have been chosen to help kick off his ‘people power’ movement.
The locations that have been chosen are Sutton and Cheam (London), Windsor and Maidenhead (Berkshire), Eden Valley (Cumbria) and Liverpool City. Each area was chosen following petitions submitted asking to form projects in these areas.
Civil Servants will be on hand to help distribute funding – which is coming via the Government from dormant bank accounts – and will also help in handling legislation, promotional products, cutting through red tape and arranging promotional merchandise, where necessary.
One example of these projects is in Berkshire, where money will be used to improve local recycling rates by offering cash incentives to residents.
It is hoped that, given the ‘green’ ethos behind these projects, any promotional projects or promotional merchandise produced for these campaigns will be made from recycled or sustainable materials.

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, has announced an eight million pounds boost for recycling initiatives throughout the region. The money from the London Waste and Recycling Board is intended to address the sixty five thousand tons of rubbish which are still being sent to landfill from the capital city each year.
The London Community Resource Network will oversee the recycling schemes which will be put in place throughout the city. In total, thirty five organisations from across the capital will be involved. The idea behind the scheme is to allow Londoners to dispose of their recyclable rubbish more effectively, ensuring it is recycled and reused where possible. Crucially, the initiative also hopes to overcome problems commonly experienced in the past when smaller groups were in charge of recycling. Creating a larger, centralised, consortium means that residents will now have a only one contact telephone number for recycling. This number will put them through to a ‘hub’ for the social enterprise, which can then deal will any and all, queries that residents may have.
Spreading the news of the new consortium will of course mean producing promotional products, promotional literature and promotional merchandise. When dealing with issues surrounding recycling it makes sound and ethical sense to use eco promotional products which themselves are made from recycled materials, or promotional merchandise produced from sustainable sources.
Promotional products such as recycled personalised pens, are an ideal choice for such a marketing campaign and a popular choice amongst councils throughout the UK. When you are supplying a new telephone number to customers (or residents) you will want to choose to advertise it in a highly visual way, on an item of promotional merchandise that can be kept to hand. Promotional pens fit the criteria perfectly and free pens are almost invariably welcomed by the recipient.

If you fancy a day out with the family then you should check out the Edinburgh Council Environment Day which is being run on Thursday 15th July 2010. Take the gang to the Cramond Promenade (Edinburgh) and join in the fun from 10:30am until 3pm.
The Environment Day celebrations will features a host of guests including, policemen, firemen, coast guards and country rangers. There will also be representatives from the Council’s Environmental Warden department, who will have a selection of promotional products, promotional literature and promotional merchandise to hand out. Events on the day will include many fun family activities, such as face painting, bike riding tips and Roman fort touring.
The purpose of the day is obviously to highlight environmental issues within the local community and in particular to get people to become more responsible for and aware of, issues such as graffiti, fly tipping and dog fouling.
Eco Promotional products, such as Doggy Doo Bags, alongside the complementary promotional merchandise products – Biodegradable Poo Bags – are a fabulous way to encourage pet owners to take more responsibility regarding the disposal of their animals ‘mess’. Favoured by many councils throughout the country, these items are hygienic, cost effective and really get results.

The Forestry Commission will be on guard from the 12th July – 18th July 2010 to raise awareness as to the continuing dog fouling problem throughout Nottingham’s most visited beauty and wooded areas. Rangers will be armed with spray cans, to literally ‘highlight’ the problems caused by dog mess that has been left behind by irresponsible and lazy pet owners.
According to the Nottingham Post, the areas that will be visited by rangers during the awareness campaign include, Boughton Brake, Sherwood Heath and Ollerton Pit Wood. These areas of natural beauty have been desecrated by dog owners, who have either simply left dog poop without clearing it up, left dog poop bags lying on the floor, or – quite unfathomably – hung bags of dog poop from trees.
Even though The Forestry Commission has provided bins specifically for the purpose of disposing of pet mess, the problem seems to be escalating – hence the education days planned by rangers. Rangers visiting the areas during the times specified will also be encouraging animal owners to correctly dispose of any foul mess left being by their pets by handing out promotional merchandise bags, similar to the very popular promotional products – Biodegradable Poo Bags.
Indeed, pet owners who struggle to find and use dog mess disposal bins often find that items such as promotional merchandise Doggy Doo Bags are ideal for walking your pet in wooded, forest or park areas. These promotional products are convenient for pet owners as they clip handily to pet leads and as such can be hygienically transported to the next dog poop bin.
The Doggy Doo Bags promotional merchandise is also personalisable. So should any organisation wish to use these items as promotional products to spread their message and encourage pet owners to clean up, these really are ideal.

With the coalition Government pushing hard to make schools across the country sustainable by 2020, Eco Schools have released information for those interested in signing up to the initiatives, as well as highlighting the many benefits garnered along the way.

The scheme is run by the Foundation for Environmental Education and works closely with Keep Britain Tidy, to tackle environmental issues and draw up plans associated with introducing biodiversity onto school grounds, litter problems, healthy living and recycling.

Caerphilly Local Council has become the only local council borough in Wales to hit its quarterly recycling targets (set at 40%). It hit a high of 49%, which compares to an average of 37%, for the rest of Wales. Caerphilly Local Council have clearly succeeded where others have failed.
A representative for the borough told Wales Online that it attributes its success to the simplicity of the system. Whereas some local borough councils throughout England have implemented kerbside collections consisting of up to nine different recycling bins, Caerphilly kept things simple for their residents – with a one bags fits all system. Employing a bi-weekly refuse collection system, a weekly food rubbish system and a free for all recycling materials collection, targets have been met by listening to residents’ cries for an easy to use scheme.
If councils throughout England insist in pursuing a multiple bin system, then in order to meet targets they may have to consider a more aggressive marketing campaign. Items of promotional products, literature and promotional merchandise can effectively facilitate this. Promotional products, such as recycled wall calendars and promotional merchandise, such as recycled pens, help as visual reminders to residents of the importance of recycling their rubbish.

It has been reported that a Local Borough Council spent over forty one thousand pounds in a single year on bottled water for staff meetings. This shocking amount was uncovered by The Mirror and will no doubt be met with anger and dismay by many families, businesses and individuals who are going to experience a tougher time all round in lieu of the recent stringent budget cuts. Other unnecessary spends by the council included over £20K on snacks for staff meetings and over £11k on a dinner for the Mayor.
In addition to the ridiculous amount spent on bottled water, the issue raises a very real environmental concern. As the Government constantly harps on about carbon footprint, real consideration must be given to the large volume of disposable water bottles used by public sector staff. There are many alternatives to disposable water bottles and indeed there are many eco-friendly promotional products and items of eco-friendly promotional merchandise that can do the job just as well.
Issuing staff with one off promotional products such as the Eco Friendly Hydropal filter bottle, or promotional merchandise such as the Eco Friendly Biodegrade-a-bottle, must surely represent a more budget and environmentally friendly alternative.

Proving that youngsters understand the importance of taking care of the environment, three hundred and fifty pupils have taken part in an eco retreat day run by Cardiff Council. The primary school children, aged between seven and eleven, were part of Cardiff Council’s ‘Really Rubbish’ campaign, an initiative designed to educate children as to the importance of global warming and to broaden children’s awareness of environmental issues.
During the retreat, the children who attended were able to showcase projects that they had spent weeks working on. The highlight of the event was the Really Rubbish Spring/Summer 2010 Competition – ‘Re-Fashion Live’. This event allowed children to produce an outfit, or accessory, made from recycled materials.
Following a catwalk show, eleven finalists were picked on the day. Designs chosen as winners included, a handbag made from a denim skirt, jeans made from magazines, a dress made from newspaper and a backpack, made from a washing powder box.
The children wholeheartedly embraced the event and it was deemed a success. This event showcases one of the different ways in which councils can get the environmental message across to the younger generations. Other methods include the use of promotional products and promotional leaflets to raise awareness. However, children are more likely to respond to a message if it is conveyed in such a way that they are able to become actively involved, or through the use of promotional merchandise.
Promotional products, such as Eco Friendly Recycled Newspaper Pencils, are ideal for spreading the message to kids. These promotional products are brightly coloured, attractive, usable and user friendly.
Other examples of promotional merchandise that will appeal to kids are items such as Eco Friendly Eco Pens and Recycled Drink Bottle Rulers. Promotional merchandise such as Eco Friendly Organic Pencil Cases also proves very popular with the younger generations.
