Residents in Potters Bar will have to get used to new recycling bins this week, as Hertsmere Borough Council make alterations to the recycling within the area. Glass and plastics can now be placed in the new brown wheelie bins. In something of a shuffle around, the new brown recycling bins will replace the old black recycling boxes and new green bins will replace the old brown garden waste bins! No doubt the local council will supply residents with a plethora of literature, promotional merchandise, leaflets and promotional products to explain the changes!

The campaign will use posters, promotional products, leaflets and promotional merchandise to spread the word that foil and cans, aerosols and tins, can all be dropped into household recycling boxes, or brought to local recycling centres.

The new coalition Government may be big on taking things back to their ‘grass roots’ and handing more power to local and community levels – in theory – but in practice, as one local borough council found out this week, things are still firmly controlled from the top! Terry Cutmore, councillor for Rochford District Council – England’s most successful recycling borough – has spoken out against Environment Secretary, Caroline Spelman’s, plans to ’streamline’ and ‘uncomplicate’ recycling methods in his area.

As reported in a local newspaper, Rochford District Council have just recently hit their 65 per cent recycling targets and have done so using a three bin system. The straight forward method requires residents to separate rubbish into either ‘food waste’ or ‘dry recyclable items’ or ‘other rubbish.’ Compared to the complicated (and as yet unproven nine bin fiasco some residents are faced with), the Rochford method clearly shows that simplicity works for the general public – with all important statistics to back it up!

It seems that now all anyone can do is wait to find out the final verdict on the recycling system overhaul – with the public, local councils and businesses all being invited to share their opinion with the Government over the coming months.

Whichever method is finally chosen and however many bins everyone ends up with, one thing is for sure, the public will have to be clearly informed of any changes that are going to be made. Over twelve thousand residents have signed a petition to save their local tip, resulting in council officials having to delay a planned closure of the site. The national press have reported that the Burntwood Household Waste Recycling Centre in Staffordshire was set to close on the fifth of July, but in light of the petition, this proposition has been deferred and a full scale investigation into all the recycling centres in the local area will be carried out.

In a bid to save money, the council were going to close the recycling centre, as it had been deemed “outdated and small”. It was also hoped that this would lighten the burden of the tax payer.

A Photo Finish for recycling Manchester Competition

Congratulations are due to Sunnybank Primary school, the winners of the Recycle for Greater Manchester, “My Recycling Foto” competition. The picture that scooped the school first prize in the competition features five pupils showcasing their works of art – which were all, of course, constructed from recycled materials.

The Recycle for Greater Manchester “My Recycling Foto” competition was run in conjunction with Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority and Viridor Laing. The competition was part of a marketing campaign designed to draw attention to the launch of a new recycling website for residents of the Manchester area. Pupils at the winning school were all treated to a class trip to a local waste education centre, wherein they no doubt received recycling related promotional products, literature and promotional merchandise to enhance their field trip experience.

City of London Gets Recycling Boost

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, has announced an eight million pounds boost for recycling initiatives throughout the region. The money from the London Waste and Recycling Board is intended to address the sixty five thousand tons of rubbish which are still being sent to landfill from the capital city each year.

The London Community Resource Network will oversee the recycling schemes which will be put in place throughout the city. In total, thirty five organisations from across the capital will be involved. The idea behind the scheme is to allow Londoners to dispose of their recyclable rubbish more effectively, ensuring it is recycled and reused where possible. Crucially, the initiative also hopes to overcome problems commonly experienced in the past when smaller groups were in charge of recycling. Creating a larger, centralised, consortium means that residents will now have a only one contact telephone number for recycling. This number will put them through to a ‘hub’ for the social enterprise, which can then deal will any and all, queries that residents may have.
