Residents in Potters Bar will have to get used to new recycling bins this week, as Hertsmere Borough Council make alterations to the recycling within the area. In response to requests from residents, new brown recycling bins will be given to households and will mean that for the first time, glass can now be recycled.
Glass and plastics can now be placed in the new brown wheelie bins. In something of a shuffle around, the new brown recycling bins will replace the old black recycling boxes and new green bins will replace the old brown garden waste bins! No doubt the local council will supply residents with a plethora of literature, promotional merchandise, leaflets and promotional products to explain the changes!
Indeed, any local council which make changes to recycling methods, or are just keen to promote any current campaigns they have running, should consider using environmentally friendly promotional products. Using items of Eco promotional merchandise for campaigns, such as Eco Friendly Magnets – which are made from recycled CD cases and can be fully customised – ensures that the message sent out is done so in as green a way as possible!

Two local councils will be piloting a scheme to increase the volume of metal that is recycled within their boroughs. Joining forces with ‘Metal Matters’ and also several drinks can manufacturers, the recycling scheme is aiming to break through current barriers and make metal recycling a concern for every household.
The campaign will use posters, promotional products, leaflets and promotional merchandise to spread the word that foil and cans, aerosols and tins, can all be dropped into household recycling boxes, or brought to local recycling centres.
Who knew that metal was so versatile and lent itself to recycling so very easily? Indeed, according to the MetalMatters website, household waste (such as, tin cans, wrapping and cooking foil and aerosol cans) are all 100% recyclable and have an incredibly fast turnaround, to boot. Indeed, according to those in the know, “within six weeks, a can that was put in one of the kerbside recycling boxes, can be back on the shelves, as a new tin of beans!”.
The two council boroughs which will be spearheading this marketing campaign are East Hampshire and Nuneaton & Bedworth. It is thought that if all goes well and the results are promising, the campaign may be rolled out across the country.
The campaign will of, course, be relying on promotional materials to facilitate its smooth running. Indeed, many councils choose to use promotional merchandise made from recycled materials for eco related projects. Indeed, using sustainably sourced promotional products has become increasingly popular in recent years.
Some of the most popular and best selling eco friendly promotional products, include Saturn Duo Pens, Recycled Newspaper Pencils and Cotton Shopper bags. Items of Eco promotional merchandise which are also popular include Indus Pens, Recycled Sticky Notes and Organic Pencil Cases.

The new coalition Government may be big on taking things back to their ‘grass roots’ and handing more power to local and community levels – in theory – but in practice, as one local borough council found out this week, things are still firmly controlled from the top! Terry Cutmore, councillor for Rochford District Council – England’s most successful recycling borough – has spoken out against Environment Secretary, Caroline Spelman’s, plans to ’streamline’ and ‘uncomplicate’ recycling methods in his area.
As reported in a local newspaper, Rochford District Council have just recently hit their 65 per cent recycling targets and have done so using a three bin system. The straight forward method requires residents to separate rubbish into either ‘food waste’ or ‘dry recyclable items’ or ‘other rubbish.’ Compared to the complicated (and as yet unproven nine bin fiasco some residents are faced with), the Rochford method clearly shows that simplicity works for the general public – with all important statistics to back it up!
It seems that now all anyone can do is wait to find out the final verdict on the recycling system overhaul – with the public, local councils and businesses all being invited to share their opinion with the Government over the coming months.
Whichever method is finally chosen and however many bins everyone ends up with, one thing is for sure, the public will have to be clearly informed of any changes that are going to be made. What better way to spread the word than with a marketing campaign that relies on promotional products that have been sourced from sustainable materials and promotional merchandise made from recycled goods.
There are many promotional products available that are eco friendly and vast amounts of promotional merchandise that promote a green ethos, whilst helping to inform the target audience of any necessary changes being implemented!

Practically everyone now knows that they have to recycle their waste and in practice, most people nowadays do. Whether they recycle as a result of education, through concern for the planet, or simply because new bin collection routines have forced them to – the end result is the same and generally this means recycling targets are being hit throughout the UK.
However, one area where the UK is failing very short is recycling electronic goods. WEEE, or the ‘Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment’ directive, is currently (according to MHW Magazine) recycling only 14 per cent of smaller electrical items. The EU target for 2016 for WEEE items is a whopping 85 per cent – so the time has come now for those within the sector to do something about this.
This is why a collaborative partnership has been set up by those involved in this sector (including DHL, ValpaK, ERP, Repic, Overton Recycling and SWEEEP) and a television campaign is on the cards. It is hoped by all involved that a ‘centrally led’ marketing campaign will help to educate people about the importance of recycling small electronic goods and also inform them as to the locations where it is possible to do this.
It has not been made clear yet whether the television campaign will be supported by further marketing tools – such as promotional products, leaflets, promotional merchandise or direct mailing.
Many companies involved in highlighting the importance of recycling or promoting a greener ethos, with a promotional merchandise campaign, often do so by using promotional merchandise which is made from recycled or sustainable sourced materials.
Promotional products, such as Recycled Promotional Newspaper Pencils and Eco Friendly Magnets, are very popular choices for environment-based campaigns.

Over twelve thousand residents have signed a petition to save their local tip, resulting in council officials having to delay a planned closure of the site. The national press have reported that the Burntwood Household Waste Recycling Centre in Staffordshire was set to close on the fifth of July, but in light of the petition, this proposition has been deferred and a full scale investigation into all the recycling centres in the local area will be carried out.
In a bid to save money, the council were going to close the recycling centre, as it had been deemed “outdated and small”. It was also hoped that this would lighten the burden of the tax payer.
Recycling is vital for the planet and many councils have strict and stringent recycling targets which they are expected to meet. Recycled materials can also be put to very good use, being made into all manner of new goods. Recycled promotional products and promotional merchandise made from recycled materials, are very popular with councils and schools in particular.
Companies and businesses hoping to display their ‘greener’ side also favour eco friendly promotional products and sustainably sourced promotional merchandise, for use in their marketing campaigns.

Congratulations are due to Sunnybank Primary school, the winners of the Recycle for Greater Manchester, “My Recycling Foto” competition. The picture that scooped the school first prize in the competition features five pupils showcasing their works of art – which were all, of course, constructed from recycled materials.
The Recycle for Greater Manchester “My Recycling Foto” competition was run in conjunction with Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority and Viridor Laing. The competition was part of a marketing campaign designed to draw attention to the launch of a new recycling website for residents of the Manchester area. Pupils at the winning school were all treated to a class trip to a local waste education centre, wherein they no doubt received recycling related promotional products, literature and promotional merchandise to enhance their field trip experience.
The winners were also presented, by local councillors, with a digital camera. In recognition of this proud achievement, their winning entry was also framed for them to keep and put on display.
The new recycling website concentrates on educating residents as to recycling issues, in addition to keeping them up to date with local campaigns, competitions, details about recycling centres opening hours and accessibility. There are even recipe details from the Governments latest ‘Love Food, Hate Waste’ campaign on-site.
If your company, school or department are considering launching a recycling related marketing campaign then you will find an abundance of eco promotional merchandise available to support it. There are many items of promotional products that have been made from recycled materials, together with promotional merchandise which has been constructed from sustainable sources.
All recycling related promotional products and promotional materials are fully personalisable, allowing you to display details of your brand, company, logo or message, in an aesthetically pleasing and vibrant way.

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, has announced an eight million pounds boost for recycling initiatives throughout the region. The money from the London Waste and Recycling Board is intended to address the sixty five thousand tons of rubbish which are still being sent to landfill from the capital city each year.
The London Community Resource Network will oversee the recycling schemes which will be put in place throughout the city. In total, thirty five organisations from across the capital will be involved. The idea behind the scheme is to allow Londoners to dispose of their recyclable rubbish more effectively, ensuring it is recycled and reused where possible. Crucially, the initiative also hopes to overcome problems commonly experienced in the past when smaller groups were in charge of recycling. Creating a larger, centralised, consortium means that residents will now have a only one contact telephone number for recycling. This number will put them through to a ‘hub’ for the social enterprise, which can then deal will any and all, queries that residents may have.
Spreading the news of the new consortium will of course mean producing promotional products, promotional literature and promotional merchandise. When dealing with issues surrounding recycling it makes sound and ethical sense to use eco promotional products which themselves are made from recycled materials, or promotional merchandise produced from sustainable sources.
Promotional products such as recycled personalised pens, are an ideal choice for such a marketing campaign and a popular choice amongst councils throughout the UK. When you are supplying a new telephone number to customers (or residents) you will want to choose to advertise it in a highly visual way, on an item of promotional merchandise that can be kept to hand. Promotional pens fit the criteria perfectly and free pens are almost invariably welcomed by the recipient.

Caerphilly Local Council has become the only local council borough in Wales to hit its quarterly recycling targets (set at 40%). It hit a high of 49%, which compares to an average of 37%, for the rest of Wales. Caerphilly Local Council have clearly succeeded where others have failed.
A representative for the borough told Wales Online that it attributes its success to the simplicity of the system. Whereas some local borough councils throughout England have implemented kerbside collections consisting of up to nine different recycling bins, Caerphilly kept things simple for their residents – with a one bags fits all system. Employing a bi-weekly refuse collection system, a weekly food rubbish system and a free for all recycling materials collection, targets have been met by listening to residents’ cries for an easy to use scheme.
If councils throughout England insist in pursuing a multiple bin system, then in order to meet targets they may have to consider a more aggressive marketing campaign. Items of promotional products, literature and promotional merchandise can effectively facilitate this. Promotional products, such as recycled wall calendars and promotional merchandise, such as recycled pens, help as visual reminders to residents of the importance of recycling their rubbish.

The Communities Secretary, Eric Pickles, has backed a recycling scheme which will reward the general public with food, restaurant and shopping vouchers, in exchange for recycling household waste.
The scheme, which underwent a trial by Windsor and Maidenhead Council, attaches micro chips to recycling bins, which are then weighed upon collection. The heavier the bin, the more the household is recycling and the more rewards it can earn. Those who take part in the scheme could receive up to one hundred and thirty pounds in vouchers each year.
The recycle and reward scheme is set to replace a proposed system whereby families would be penalised and charged based upon what they throw away.
If the trials are successful, it is thought that the ‘rewards as you recycle’ scheme could be rolled out across the country. Of course, local councils will provide households with promotional literature, promotional merchandise and the micro chipped recycling bins – as and when needed.
There are many promotional products that councils could use to encourage recycling, including highly visual promotional merchandise such as Wheelie Bin Pencil Sharpeners and Wheelie Bin Pen Pots.

Having conducted extensive research, South Derbyshire County Council has regrettably concluded that it’s residents are not recycling a sufficiently high proportion of their household waste. South Derbyshire Council has even been in discussions with refuse collectors, hoping to identify the areas that leave the lowest volumes of recycling out for collection.
In addition to using promotional products, promotional literature and promotional merchandise to spearhead campaigns in encouraging residents to recycle more, the council is going to create two positions for ‘Door Stepper’ agents. The ‘door steppers’ will visit residents in their own homes and offer advice and guidance as to what items should be disposed of in an eco friendly way and which items from household waste can be sent via regular bin collection to landfill.
Funding for the new positions will be covered by Government cash that has already been allocated to Derbyshire’s county and district councils for new recycling schemes and associated promotional merchandise. ‘This Is Derbyshire’ reports that money from the rest of the budget will be allocated to pay for ‘anti’ fly tipping campaigns; recycling-related promotional products; and for the new Derbyshire Kerbside can collections campaign.
